Great entry level charts for jazz string ensembles. Transposed from the original key of four flats to the more string-friendly no sharps or flats. Get started with improvisation with the suggested solos written for each section. Ensemble and solo sections for anyone and everyone. This chart has been road-tested at Suzuki institutes, summer camps by Mark O’Connor, Christian Howes, and the University of South Carolina. This works with Middle and High School ensembles, but is also enjoyed by University and professional players.

BOOKENDS is a contrafact over a familiar waltz form, but played instead in four. The chord changes are familiar. There is a good balance of ensemble tutti sections, contrapuntal independence, and dynamic ranges. The rhythms are jazz inflected and require swinging. There is an improvisation section for any and all. After the solo section, the recapitulation is more development of the main themes.
*Contrafact: A piece composed over the framework of another tune. Oleo & Anthropology are contrafacts over the chord changes to Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm. Contract is not to be confused with an “alternative fact”…
